Blairsville Kiwanis Club encourages the safe disposal of unused, unwanted, or expired prescription drugs. October 24 has been designated as DEA's National Drug Take Back Day.
The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue. According to the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 9.9 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises that the best way to dispose of most types of unused or expired medicines (both prescription and over the counter) is to drop off the medicine at a drug takeback site or dropbox.
Union County Sheriff's Office has a 24-hour dropbox located outside the office, and CVS pharmacies accept drugs for disposal.
